Publishing & Literary Translation

Publishing & Literary Translation

Novels, short story collections, non-fiction books, academic monographs, and editorial content translated for international publishers and literary agents.

Milan’s publishing industry is one of the most active in Europe. The city’s major publishing houses — Mondadori, Feltrinelli, Rizzoli, Einaudi in Turin and Adelphi here in Milan — produce work that travels. Italian fiction, non-fiction, and academic books find international readership when the translation is good enough to carry them. When it is not good enough, the book does not travel far.

Literary translation is a different craft from most translation work. The translator is not transcribing meaning. They are rewriting in a different language, making decisions about voice, register, rhythm, and cultural resonance that the original author made in their own language. A bad literary translation is not just inaccurate. It is flat, and flat writing does not get published.

We work with literary translators who have publishing records in the target language. Not generalists who also do books, but specialists who have published their own translations with recognised publishers. For Italian to English, our translators have published with UK and US houses. For Italian to German, with German literary publishers. The standard is whether the work would be accepted by the target market’s editorial gatekeepers.

Services cover the full literary workflow: novel and short story translation, non-fiction and essay translation, academic monograph translation for university presses, publisher pitch materials and synopses, author interview and press material translation, and back-cover and marketing copy for international editions.
